Nail polish products emit so called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)— invisible chemicals that evaporate fast, filling the space with a scent we associate with beauty.
Letting the genie out of the bottle is a scrollytelling website that creates a scrolling experience on the invisible implication of nail products on air quality.
Equipped with several sensors I went to different nail salons in Barcelona and measured the chemical concentration emitted into the air.
Data Collection of air quality in four different nail salons in February, 2025 in Barcelona. This data is enriched by meta data on room size, ventilation methods, number of people being attented and room layout. Additionlly nail painting data was collected by setting up the measuring device in a home environment.
The data is then transformed into visual narrative showing the difference between exposure times of clients and nail salon workers with a visual language adapted too the nail salon surroundings.
