To identify the problems patients face with peritoneal dialysis, we researched medical articles and studies on procedures and treatment options for kidney failure. We also collaborated with the nephrology sector of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, interviewing healthcare professionals and patients to detect potential problems.
From this research, we developed a list of requirements for our device. We sought to simplify and automate the tasks of the dialysis process, reduce the size of the equipment and allow patients to perform the treatment sitting down. We emphasized the importance of users feeling accompanied and assisted, and that treatment data should be shared instantly with physicians to prevent infections and keep good control.
In addition, we focused on sustainability, reducing the waste generated by single-use products by using a reusable container for non-sterile parts of the system.
As a result, we were able to perform tests and through a pressure system reduce the height of the system, we were able to automate tasks, reducing steps for the user, and all this added to achieving a more user-friendly interface.
