Elegant and flexible modular lighting system for Marset.
Inspiration.
The basic concert behind Montréal is inspired by railways. A modern trend in rolling stock is illuminating curved surfaces of the ceiling in order for it to seem larger. Metro systems such as the one in Montréal where stations contrast long strips of direct light, projected indirect light on vaulted ceilings and bold colours were a major inspiration. Stations such as Préfontaine, Angrignon, Jolicoeur or Acadie were the most inspiring. Also inspired by traditional Catalan vault ceilings and Marset’s very own factory.
System.
Montréal is a lineal suspension system that elegantly uses just two aluminum extrusions to create an infinite triple arch geometry: a central extrusion and a side wing (which is used on either side). We challenged ourselves to create an elegant intriguing solution solely using one material and one industrial process.
Only the central extrusion has electronics, which simplifies assembly. Everything is built into these extrusions: the paths to connect the indirect lights to the centre, the connection points between modules, the sliding module for connections.
Lights.
A central direct light gives technical light for work and indirect lights bathe the arches with a warm, inviting light that makes the room seem larger than it is.
Infinite and Loop.
The system is designed to be deployed in two stages. The first version, Infinite can extend ad infinitum and is be capped with a flat cap (laser-cut).
The original design of Montréal envisioned a cap that would create a continuous loop of indirect light, which can only be achieved with an aluminum injection piece. We have put this as a second phase, due to the increased cost of this cap.
