MARSET

Context. From reference to concept.

Recapturing the local and proximity value of Marset, Trama embraces as a reference what was once a fundamental pillar in Catalonia: the textile industry. This industry established itself in Catalonia, laying the foundations for the Industrial Revolution at the end of the 18th century and causing a significant economic and social transformation. In addition to the intrinsic values of evolution, technique, progress, design, and local value, two key elements are highlighted in Trama: the industrial loom and its result, the textile.

And there was light.

Trama is a suspension lamp for new workspaces, mainly focused on individual work although it can be adapted to the multiple spaces the new ‘open offices’, Hubs and coworking’s offer. It also seeks to ensure a working day that is more productive, comfortable and efficient for the worker.

It has been designed both from a functional and technical point of view, ensuring visual comfort, as well as a proper user experience while interacting with the lamp. At first glance, the prominence of the fabric has the ability to transform the space. Like hanging clothes, it drapes with extreme lightness while creating layers and heights. Interacting with the light evokes a cosy and intimate feeling full of textures and nuances. The light projects, transforms, and cohesively generates well-being. Regarding the user’s manipulation of the luminaire and mechanism, the example of mechanical looms was taken, observing the gestures of the operators, the shapes of the bobbins, and the arrangement of the different linear elements.

Features.

Interactive. With the idea of the loom, a system is proposed to open the light through vertical movement. This opening and closing mechanism is presented as a metaphor for looms, mimicking the back-and-forth motion of the shuttle and the movement of the beater in each cycle. Thus, while incorporating technological solutions in other attributes, we propose to maintain a more tactile and human aspect, enhancing the relationship between the light and the user. This allows the user to adjust the light according to the needs of the moment and feel a precise personalization tailored to their desires.

A simple mechanism is presented in which gravity and the properties of the materials allow for the movement and balance of this lamp. It is a system that is not immediately noticeable until one approaches and interacts with it.

Iterative. Trama aims to promote a more productive, efficient, and above all, comfortable workday for users; therefore, we propose the integration of IoT. By adjusting the intensity and temperature of the light according to the circadian rhythm, we boost peak efficiency periods and facilitate transitions to rest. Through the fabric, the light creates a pleasant atmosphere while the direct light effectively illuminates the workspace.

Sustainability and Well-being. In line with the previous concepts, well-being is a central focus. On one hand, we highly value the 100% recyclable Aeria fabric (from Texaa), known for its light reflection and transmission capabilities, very low atmospheric emissions, and VOC levels, as well as its acoustic contribution, which adds value to a work context. On the other hand, the effect of light passing through the fabric highlights its texture and intricate details. Additionally, the fabric allows for powerful and technical lighting on the work surface without causing discomfort to the user’s eyes, ensuring visual comfort during potentially long workdays

Colours from our landscape. We propose a selection of four colours inspired by the local Mediterranean landscape. According to colour psychology and its association with concepts, this palette promotes creativity, serenity, productivity, and stability. The shades transform with the light and integrate seamlessly into the space. Even when turned off, the fabric maintains a certain language and character, enhancing the lamp’s appearance. Exploring the possibilities of colour, can also be a tool for branding, such as using corporate colours in the lamp.

Family. Trama is introduced as a suspension lamp primarily for individual workspaces, but its possibilities are numerous. As a future proposal, with a series of adjustments, the luminaire can create a family and a unique language. Examples we propose include wall fixtures and table lamps. These additions provide language, composition, playfulness, and many possibilities to explore.
