Our master’s program contributes to Speculative Urban Futures, a European research project that develops new design methodologies to be shared through five pilot packages. We took part in Counterfactual Histories, exploring how reimagining historical events can challenge dominant narratives, rethink inherited systems and values and inspire alternative presents and immediate futures in design.
In “The Kitchen Affair”, we used this method to create speculative designs around the kitchen understood from its spatial, technological, societal, cultural, and ecological dimensions. We mapped key historical systems and moments, built counterfactual timelines based on different outcomes of selected events, and designed alternative present scenarios to reflecte these alternative narratives.
