Identity Crisis
How does AI see you?
Can you rely on AI's evaluation of your digital data?
Identity Crisis investigates the complexities of online identity and its influence on both human and AI-based decision-making. As digital profiles increasingly shape human and AI assessments in areas like e-commerce, recruitment, and social interactions, this project examines whether online identities can be considered reliable and explores the boundaries people push when presenting themselves online.
This project involved having strangers assess Instagram profiles of participants to create digital identities based on strangers’ perceptions. These identities were then compared to real-life self-perceptions through a “Who’s Who” game, sparking reflection on the gaps between online portrayals and reality. To deepen the exploration, AI systems were integrated to generate portraits and analyze classmates’ real images through the DeepFace library, revealing biases in those systems, such as reinforcing stereotypes based on ethnicity or appearance.
